The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Kano State Polytechnic Chapter: … Unity in Service and Technological Development.
Established on September, 1992, under the leadership of Dr. Adamu Okechukwu, the ASUP Kano State Polytechnic Chapter has a rich history of advancing the interests of academic staff in Kano State Polytechnic. As a constituent chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Nigeria, we are part of a registered trade union (CAP 437 of 1990) and an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Our union fosters collaboration with other education sector unions, working within the bounds of our constitution to promote the welfare and interests of our members, as well as the Technical Education sub-sector and the broader education sector.
Our membership encompasses all academic staff, including lecturers, technologists, instructors, and librarians, employed in Kano State Polytechnic. As a chapter of ASUP Nigeria, our membership extends to all public polytechnics and monotechnics in Nigeria. We are dedicated to safeguarding and advancing the interests of our members, while contributing to the development of the education sector.
The activities of ASUP Kano State Polytechnic Chapter are guided by the Union’s Constitution, which has been approved and gazetted by the Registrar of Trade Unions, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja. We also adhere to the provisions of the Trade Union Act and the Nigerian Constitution, drawing on our rich history and traditions to inform our practices. Our legal adviser ensures that we comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
We are primarily funded by membership subscription fees, which are deducted at source and amount to 2% of members’ consolidated basic salaries. We also generate revenue from the organization of annual educational programs, conferences, and workshops, as well as from levies and donations from government and non-governmental agencies. To ensure transparency and accountability, our accounts are audited externally and presented to the Congress. Our accounts are currently held at Ecobank, Hotoro Branch, Kano.
